Dance and Music therapy are forms of therapy wherein the participants are taught to channel constructively and express their thoughts and feelings. These are very helpful in individuals, young and old, who feel that they are unable to truly let other people know who they are inside and what they feel by just using speech and writing.
Dance and Movement Therapy
Human beings have the innate capacity to communicate and express thoughts and feelings through physical movements and body language. Dancing is common to all tribes and races of the past and present. Young children are able to express in this way without oral communication and without inhibitions. Unfortunately however, as people grow up in our modern society, they are bogged down by rules, etiquette and norms that discourage this kind of free verbal and physical expression resulting in pent up feelings. These hidden emotions can often lead to physical manifestations and illnesses.
This form of therapy can be applied to any individual from any age group who is willing. Dance and movement therapy’s goal is to enable the person to discover the physical movements he is capable of. This therapy is also intended to help individuals express and hopefully resolve deep-rooted problems through communicating and relating to others through the medium of physical movements and dance. It helps people recognize, understand and come to terms with these repressed emotions and communicating them to others at the same time.
Dance movement therapy can help relieve psychological, emotional and stress-related disorders. It can also help people who are anxious and depressed, people with addictions, problems pertaining to physical, sexual, or verbal abuse and even learning disabilities. It has been observed that children who respond strongly to this therapy are often found to have physical, mental, behavioral and intellectual problems like autism. This form of therapy is said to be most beneficial to those with psychological and emotional disturbances and those who are intellectually challenged.
Dance therapy sessions are most often done in certain day-care and ‘drop-in’ centers and hospitals. In these sessions, the therapist may suggest movements but encourages participants to take the initiative and make their own. Eventually, the participants learn to express their feelings constructively, talk recognized problems over and learn how to resolve them better.
Music Therapy
Making music has always been an essential part of all cultures as leisure, as a mode of communication as well as a medium for expression. Music is a very powerful tool and has shown great effects on human beings. Music can entice, captivate and excite. It can also stimulate feelings of sadness, fear, joy and serenity. Because of these reactions, the experience of making and listening to music can be very beneficial when used as a form of therapy.
In music therapy, the participants make music as a mode of communication and as an expression of their deepest emotions. In a session, they make use of different instruments as well as their own voices to create music. Music therapy can help people with various disorders but is especially helpful in children and adults with intellectual and learning disabilities. This can also help those who are physically limited in some way by improving breathing and muscle coordination.
These sessions are often done in certain hospitals, in residential homes and schools. Trained therapists with a qualification in music are required to conduct the therapy.

You may already have an idea about what belly dancing music is and what it is not. Maybe you have formed mental images of the Pyramids or the sun setting in an Egyptian sky. The music that you imagine is usually of a typical sound. But you might be surprised to find that the techno beats of modern music are a wonderful variation on the traditional music.
The Mix of Styles
The music used today is a mix of different styles. They are as different as the many varieties of dance movements used in belly dancing. The pop music that is popular in Egypt has become an influence in the music that is used today in the dance. Latin and Saudi influences have also made their way into the music that is heard today.
When you are choosing the music for your routine you should select something that will inspire you to dance. It should be a unique mix that expresses your personal tastes and accents the movements you are performing. There are some people that feel more comfortable with the music of Egypt because of its tradition and unique flavor.
If you have never heard Show Me by Ofra Haza you might well take a listen and see if it fits with your dance routine. It is a mix of the pop music of the Middle East combined with Saudi, and Beladi. When you hear this music you will immediately think of belly dancing.
It is the same as listening to music in a nightclub. The music is designed to inspire people to dance. The same can be said of belly dancing music. The music may be something that you have never heard before, but you will no doubt feel the urge to get up and dance when it is played.
Traditional music is heavily inspired by oriental music. It is full of spontaneous sounds and will get you up on your feet when you listen. When a dancer is dancing to this spontaneous music they may find that their movements will change as they are inspired by the music. This is a spectacular performance. Too many belly dancing routines are heavily choreographed and have lost much of the spontaneity of the dance.
Many of the routines used today are directly influenced by the new modern music. This music has changed the way it is performed. It is an ever evolving art form that has taken a giant step into modern times.
Free Concerts – Dance, Sing, and Swing
Do you know where to go for wonderful free entertainment? Do you love music and dancing? Do you like to meet new people? Do you look for places the entire family can be entertained? If the answer is yes, read on.
Summer is here in full swing. We’ve had a heat wave that could melt butter and fry and egg without trying. It’s time to get out and enjoy the great outdoors in the early evening when the heat dies down.
I just came from a free concert in my area. They are all over the city on different days and areas. They are at the beaches on the weekends and they rock and roll and attract hundreds of music lovers at each gig.
The park I was in tonight had a great band and singer. They sang various songs and played music going back to the 40′s and worked its way up the ladder ending with popular now music.
It was wonderful watching the people clap their hands and dance in their chairs if they were not out on the dance floor. It was a wonderful evening and the whole family was throughly entertained.
The children dance and run around the park having a great time. The children can dance with their moms and dads and other children. It is a wonderful, positive family fun time together.
They have a short intermission and have a drawing. There were three wonderful baskets to choose from or you could have chosen all three baskets to win in the drawing. All you needed was the right ticket.
Every week there is a different band and singer at numerous parks and beaches around town. The admission is free. You can bring your own food if you like. It is a wonderful time for the family to spend time together.
If you do not have any free concerts in your state start them. They are a wonderful way for the community and family to reach out to each other.
